This project involves extending Mitchell Freeway 5.6 kilometres from Hester Avenue to Romeo Road in Alkimos.

Key features of the project include a new interchange at Lukin Drive, a rail tunnel for the existing rail line at Butler Station, connecting Romeo Road from Wanneroo Road to Marmion Avenue as well as a new path for pedestrians and cyclists.

The extension will service the rapidly growing north-western suburbs of Butler, Yanchep, Alkimos and Eglinton and areas to the east including Nowergup.

Benefits

  • Alleviate pressure on the local road network
  • Reduced travel times
  • Improved road safety and connectivity for those living and working in the northern suburbs.
  • Caters for the growing population in Perth's north-west

Detour options

  • Principal Shared Path closure

As part of the Mitchell Freeway Extension project, the Hester Avenue interchange is being upgraded to connect with the new freeway. A new roundabout is also being constructed on Hester Avenue to improve safety and access to and from the Nowergup Rail Depot.

Construction of these works will require the removal of existing pavement, the installation of safety barriers, closure of traffic lanes, and earthworks on both sides of Hester Avenue.

The absence of an adjacent road network prevents the project from implementing a local road detour around the works. There is also insufficient space on the road to create a safe cycling lane. Furthermore, as no safe alternative route is available, a full closure of the Principal Shared Path is necessary.

    Principal Shared Path (PSP) closure:
    • From 7 September to November 2022
    • Hester Avenue between Wanneroo Road and Mitchell Freeway (see map below)
    • Access closed to Hester Avenue from the Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail
