Great Eastern Highway is an important transport link to the eastern states, and work is planned to improve safety. Up to 1,800 vehicles use the highway each day in the Wheatbelt, with 40 per cent of those heavy vehicles.

A number of upgrades have already been completed between Northam and Kalgoorlie. Upgrades between Walgoolan and Southern Cross are underway and due for completion mid-2023. This includes road widening and shoulder sealing, town site improvements, new overtaking lanes and intersection improvements. The bridge at Walgoolan is being replaced and the bridge at Moorine Rock widened.

Two bridges in Coates Gully between El Caballo and Bakers Hill have also been replaced. Replacement of a third bridge is underway and due for completion in early-2023.

Benefits

  • Improved road safety
  • Improved road alignment with safer passing opportunities
  • Improved access for oversized vehicles
