Tanami Road is 1,035 kilometres long, linking Alice Springs in the Northern Territory to the Great Northern Highway, near Halls Creek, in Western Australia.

The 313km section in WA is unsealed (except for a small section near Sturt Creek). Upgrades will include reforming the road formation, existing roadside drainage and construction of gravel sheeting.

Design and development activities are progressing on the first 114 km. The first ten kilometres of road was constructed, sealed and open to traffic in 2023, with a further 12km of road planned to be sealed by October 2024.

Construction and sealing of the full 41km section is planned to be completed in 2025.
