The Fremantle Traffic Bridge is being replaced to improve journeys for road, shared path and river users.
The existing bridge will close on 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months, to enable completion of a new and iconic bridge for the port city.
To support the community during the closure and keep Stirling Highway moving there will be additional train and bus services, free parking at Fremantle Station, and modified road intersections to support traffic flow. There will also be safer crossings in place on Stirling Highway for those walking, wheeling or riding.
The new bridge will be built on the same alignment as the old bridge, and will feature two traffic lanes in each direction for road users, and wider and safer pedestrian and cyclist paths on each side. Also featuring higher and wider clearances, the new bridge will improve navigational safety for boats, kayaks and river users.
Upon completion, the new Fremantle traffic bridge will be Australia’s first extradosed bridge, combining elements of cantilever and a cable-stayed bridges.

Fremantle Traffic Bridge to close on 1 February 2026
The existing Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close on 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months. A range of measures to support the bridge closure will be in place from the start of the 2026 school year.
