Stage 2 of the East Kimberley (Kununurra) Regional Airport (EKRA) upgrade involves works to extend the length of the existing runway, enabling the removal of weight and passenger restrictions on aircraft taking off from Kununurra.

This project is part of the Regional Airport Pavement Upgrades (RAPU), a State Government commitment to upgrade aircraft pavements at the regional airports of Albany, Carnarvon, East Kimberley (Kununurra), Eucla and Onslow.

The Department of Transport is administering the project in partnership with the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley. Construction is currently underway, with major works expected to be completed towards the end of 2025. Approximately 55 jobs will be directly supported through the runway upgrade.

Benefits

  • Improved connectivity in Kununurra and the East Kimberley region.
  • Better access for passengers, freight and essential services.
  • Supports opportunities for tourism and other business growth in the region, with the potential to open new direct routes to the east coast and the opportunity for lower airfares.
