Great Eastern Highway is an important transport link to the eastern states, and work is planned to improve safety and improve freight efficiency. Up to 1,800 vehicles use the highway each day in the Wheatbelt, with 40 per cent of those heavy vehicles.
Upgrades between Walgoolan and Southern Cross have commenced and include road widening and shoulder sealing, town site improvements, new overtaking lanes and intersection improvements. The bridge at Walgoolan is being replaced.
A number of other upgrades have already been completed between Coates Gully and Coolgardie, including the replacement of four bridges between El Caballo and Bakers Hill, and 193km of shoulder sealing between Northam and Walgoolan.
The widening and sealing of 11km of road at Ghooli has also been completed, with development continuing for a further 11km between Ghooli and Southern Cross.
